Discover Castellana Caves: A Stunning Underground World

Located just 1.5 km from the town of Castellana Grotte, the Castellana Caves are one of Italy’s most fascinating natural wonders. This karst cave system extends for 3,348 meters and reaches a maximum depth of 122 meters. Inside, the temperature remains around 16.5°C, creating a cool, mystical environment perfect for exploration.
A Brief History
The caves were fully explored on January 23, 1938, by speleologist Franco Anelli during a research campaign in the southeastern Murge region. They are also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Since then, they have become a major attraction, drawing visitors from all over the world. Castellana Caves are easily accessible, located about 50 km from Bari Airport and 80 km from Brindisi Airport.
Visiting the Caves
Today, visitors can explore the caves through guided tours available in both Italian and English. Throughout the year, special events and performances are also organized inside the caves, making each visit a unique experience. However, apart from the caves, Castellana Grotte itself offers little in terms of additional attractions. Fortunately, the town is close to Polignano a Mare, Conversano, and Monopoli, which offer beautiful coastal views and historical sites.
